One open carnation fills the frame, its fringed petals layered in tight ruffles around a scrolled center and shaded with fine engraved hatching. Below the bloom sit a ridged calyx, a straight stem with a small node, and two pairs of narrow pointed leaves. The look is botanical sketchbook rather than sweet floral. A single-colour design where the hatching lines are cut-outs, so it behaves like detailed line art rather than a flat shape.
